Making Connections
The following assignments are optional. They can be used to replace making meals or food at home. You may choose to complete assignments twice, but with different photos or interviewees. Please try to give long answers, not just a couple of words. You should spend about an hour each assignment.
#1. Photo Journey
The family meal photo. Find a picture of a family meal. Consider special events or holidays where there may be a lot of people and food. Answer the following questions about the photo (you might need to ask an older relative). I would love to see a copy of the photo, but you MUST get permission first.
1. Who - who is there (a description is fine, I don't need actual names), who might be missing 2. What meal - describe the food (dishes, drinks, sauces, desserts, decorations) 3. When 4. Where - which person's home (Grandma's house), community name (Prince George) or outdoor space (fishing trip, picnic) 5. Why - occasion, cultural event, family practice/tradition Send your answers to me by email at [email protected]. You can send it as the text of an email or as an attached word document or picture of a page you wrote on. It must be legible! |

#2. Interview
Interview someone who is at least 60 years old. You MUST maintain physical distancing for safety reasons.
Part 1. The interview. 1. What did they eat as a child? (Try to get at least 8-10 dishes/foods) - Why? (Culture? availability? skills of the cook?) 2. Make up your own question to ask. Write it down and record the answer you are given. Part 2. Your analysis. Long answers. 1. Identify at least 2 similarities with your food today. 2. Identify at least 2 differences with your food today. 3. Would you willingly try any of the foods you aren't familiar with? Which ones, if any? Is it because you recognize ingredients? Send your questions and answers to me by email at [email protected]. You can send it as the text of an email or as an attached word document or picture of a page you wrote on. It must be legible! |
